The experiment started off well.
Earth was a peaceful planet. Sunshine never got boring and the plants and animals all got along. Life moved in circles that did not need to roll forward. There were no advancements or developments because the goal of life was not to advance or develop. It kept its eyes on the road of contentment and existence. The decorators did an amazing job working with a simple color pallet and the rugs of moss and meadows felt great under foot and hoof.
There was no sadness and fear, nothing natural was a disaster because there was nothing to destroy. Day after day, test after test, everything found its place and played its role. The charts showed harmony held, achieving a sustainable equilibrium and natural order. Everyone was happy.
One of the younger researchers, eager to earn his stripes and lacking patience as youngsters often do, was not satisfied and came up with the idea to make things better. One night, he snuck in. He reached on to Earth and picked up Man. Rolling him over in his hand, he flipped open the flap on his back to expose Manâs inner workings. The young researcher was astonished at how empty Man appeared, with only a heart that beat for love, a soul that kept him grounded in faith and nature, and a mind that was simple and at peace. There was so much room in Man, why would anyone not think to introduce things to make Man better?
The young researcher believed Earth was stagnant and his predecessors were easily satisfied with an operating model that merely maintained existence. The researcher knew by the light of day, he could not tinker with Earth the way he wished, his complacent colleagues would prevent it, so Man would do the tinkering for him, Man would be his inside agent of change. The young researcher drew from his coat pocket a small gold coin with a single word inscribed on it; want. Want for more, want for growth, want for change, want for advancement and development and betterment. The young researcher was sure if Man had want, over time, Man would be an engine of change and the researcher would in turn get the recognition he wanted.
Pressing the coin into Manâs back, the researcher closed him up and returned him to Earth.
Like I said, the experiment started off wellâŚ
